Orbit’s branding reflects connection and movement, inspired by planetary orbits and circles of friends.

Color Palette: Playful shades of purple and green to evoke vibrancy and energy.

Orbit was created in response to the common frustration people experience when trying to coordinate plans with friends. In today's fast-paced world, conflicting schedules, last-minute changes, and the chaos of group messaging apps often derail social gatherings. This highlighted a need for a platform that blends both structured event planning and the spontaneity of casual, impromptu meetups. Orbit addresses this need by offering tools that make planning easy while still allowing for the flexibility to adapt to last-minute changes.

During the design process, I faced several challenges:

  • Defining the App Flow: Before conducting research, I struggled to determine the best structure for the app. I had ideas about what might make planning easier, but I needed to refine them based on real user needs. Once I gathered research insights, I had to narrow down all the struggles into a clear, efficient user flow, ensuring that every step—from discovering events to making plans—felt intuitive and reduced friction.

  • Visualizing the Home Page: Since Orbit is both a social app and a planning tool, designing a homepage that seamlessly blends the two was a challenge. It needed to show events in an engaging way while still prioritizing functionality.

  • Feature Prioritization: Balancing simplicity with functionality was key—I had to determine which features were essential for launch and which could be added later.

  • Prototyping & Interactivity: As I was new to prototyping, I had to learn how to make my wireframes more interactive, improving usability testing and refining the user experience.

Before designing, I conducted user research to identify the most common struggles:

Survey Demographics & Key Insights

Top Planning Frustrations:

  • Scheduling conflicts were the biggest frustration—people disliked the endless back-and-forth needed to find a time that worked.

  • Different planning styles: Some preferred structured plans, while others leaned towards spontaneity, making it difficult to accommodate both.

  • Existing tools fell short: Partiful was great for big events but felt excessive for casual gatherings. Calendly worked for corporate meetings but didn’t fit social planning needs.

keY features & design deciSions

To address these challenges, I focused on the following core features, determining the Minimum Viable Product (MVP)based on research findings:

Request Availability: No more endless messaging—send a quick request and find the best time.

Event Creation:Designed for structured planners to create events with clear details.

Open Invite: A low-pressure way to invite friends to casual outings.
